So, my entire family is dieting right now. I'm the only one doing keto. Every Saturday we all get together to have dinner (I'm talking aunts, unces, cousins, the whole nine yards). My family jokingly calls that day 'Fatterday' because they allow themselves to cheat on their diets for that day. I'd like to cheat on fatterday as well, but I by no means want to take the whole day off.
I'm thinking maybe just a small item I could normally not have. Like a side of potato chips (certainly nothing like an order of pasta).
How bad would this be for my keto? Do any of you do something like fatterday?

An average beer is around 15g of carbs. The only issue is having all of those carbs at once. If you've been on keto for a while, it's possible to have 60-80 grams of carbs for several days in a row (based on a clinical trial I read earlier) and still have trace to low amounts of ketones in your system.
So, if you want to have a beer or two can you? You'll probably be fine. If the beers are your only carbs, at least. Still, I'd encourage you to switch to other drinks if at all possible. Carbs can add up fast, especially when drinking. If you're drinking straight whiskey or rum and diet cokes it's a lot harder to accidentally overcarb.
As far as getting back in goes: you'll be back in as soon as the glucose in your system gets too low. If you only barely had too many carbs, this won't take long.
Exercise speeds this process up immensely. I was doing cheats too when I started. Let me tell you that this is extremely bad for progress in weight loss. If you are trying to just maintain weight then that's fine. After a cheat day you will gain water weight 3-5lb. Which will be super discouraging.
The worse thing is that you will take 4-5days to get back to keto and this not be losing weight for these days. After you've been on keto for over a month then cheats days will affect you a bit less.
And so it will take 2-3 days to get back into ketosis. Taking a break every now and then is the only thing that keeps me sane. Knowing that I can relax occasionally and just enjoy. The trick for me was learning that that break did not equate to a crash. One ice cream was not permission to eat a pizza later. It also invariably stalls me. My cravings tend to come back very strongly and I get antsy with a ton of angst.
Sometimes it's worth it but most of the time when I look at the negatives I can decide against it. I can't imagine how much harder it would be if I broke the diet every week. That's just me though. Look up the restaurant menus online before you go.

Also, call them ahead of time and let them know that you are on a strict no sugar/no wheat diet. They will have options for you and you can have it pre-planned so you won't have to make a big deal in front of your family. I had a cheat day after I had been on Keto for a month. As KetoToTheCorps said, my cravings came back strong. I found that the next couple of days i struggled with exhaustion and cravings for sugar (because i was tired) One last thing, for me, Keto has been a great exploration of food. If i was regularly cheating, I don't think i would have discovered (home made - way better than potato chips) or one of my mainstays:.
